Some new Aussie Stuff

What a great couple of Australia shipments yesterday.  Even after working for over 25 years in the business on the wholesale side,  I still act like a “Kid in a Candy Shop,” with each new shipment.  I’ve seen literally Tens of Thousands of Trachyphyllia Brains over the years, but I still look at each one as they come out of the box.  Crazy!!!

We got in a Great assortment of Aussie Chalice Corals too.  Echinopora and Mycedium.

We also got a great load of Acanthastrea Lordhowensis (Lords) corals too.  Check these out:

How about some Elegance corals that LIVE!!!!  Go Aussie!!!

Dear Sea Dwellers,
It is with sadness that I mention the loss of one of our fellow Aquarium Community People.  Monte Valentin passed away a few days ago while doing what he loved, body surfing.  The waves this weekend were huge and drawing attention to many people living in Southern California.  Monte was not going to let these giant waves pass by without giving it a whirl.  Unfortunately, the timing wasn’t right and he was caught by a giant wave which threw him onto the nearby rocks, and two more waves fell upon him before he was pulled from the water by life guards.
Monte was most recently a sales rep for a few different Marine wholesalers here in Los Angeles, and he may have been someone you spoke to on the phone helping you with your ship out orders.  He and I only got to know each other for a short time, but he was full of life and had a great love for the sun and sea.  RIP Monte.
Last week I mentioned some Summer trends in the market and how many hobbyists may not be purchasing many new items for the aquariums but are still purchasing “janitorial” items.  I spoke to one of our customers who held a local reef club meeting at his store, and turns out, most of what the club members purchased were just that….snails, crabs, conch’s etc…
I wasn’t surprised, but think there’s more ways to take advantage of the Summer time blues than what many of us are doing.  I thought maybe I would brain-storm some ideas, and just get us all thinking about how we can be creative during the Summer months to maximize retail sales and keep our customers interested in what they are doing with their aquariums.  Some ideas for the retailer:
1. Maintain new stock arriving in the store, and advertise when shipments of live animals are arriving to create some excitement.
2. If you have items becoming store mascot’s, move them around in other sections of your store to create a new look.
3. Keep a strong inventory of low cost but high need items such as the snails, crabs etc….and HIGHLIGHT them for what they do and market them in packages by the aquarium size.  For example, a 40 gallon reef needs X amount of each of X for X price.  Packages are a great way to make it easy for the customer to maintain their aquarium for a one easy price.
I hope we all get the idea here……just be creative and think of easy ways to motivate customers.  The Summer is a great time to educate both your staff and customers, and also develop some loyal relationships with everyone.  The Summer is short, but relationships can last a really long time.
In the meantime, we are continuing to think of ways to help our customers get through the next group of weeks until School comes back into session and we fall back on our regular schedules.  We appreciate all the support so far this year, and we promise to stay dedicated and focused to keep this great product and pricing there for you all to enjoy.
Best regards,
Eric Cohen

Dear Sea Dwellers,
Nice to hear from so many of you last week:)  I am proud to be a part of this company and work with all our great staff.  I appreciate everything our staff does each week to make our company what it is today and how we can provide great quality products week in and week out!  Along with that, I appreciate all of you that choose us to be your livestock supplier!
How about discussing the ever-so-important weekly specials?  Another week of giant savings has been written on the books, so check out the great deals on our front page and second page of our weekly specials.  Tiny clown triggers are in stock and great sizes…..along with so many other super specials.
I know that many of you are loyal SDC customers because you have tried others and just don’t want to be disspointed with troubles that you can get by jumping around from supplier to supplier.  It might work in the dry-good side of things, but the livestock biz is another animal.  I want everyone to know that if you are one to venture out, and check out our competitors specials to make a decision who you might order from this week…if you don’t see that special item you need on our specials list this week, or any week, please let us know and we will do our best to get you that item on the special you need.  Bottom line….we want your business and don’t want to lose the opportunity to serve you because of an item that we might not have selected to be on special any particular week.  Again…just let us know and feel free to ask your rep for a deal that might be the difference for that order.
During slower Summer months, you want to make sure you are not taking too many risks and we can tell you with great confidence that we are overall your best choice for Marine Livestock, and we will stand behind our products if you do have an issue.  It’s the long term customer relationship that we are going for….so please tell us how we can get your next order up to the level you need.
I hope everyone’s weekend was great, and I am looking forward to tomorrow and starting the week off right!
Have a great week everyone!
Best regards,
Eric Cohen

Dear Sea Dwellers,
I received a really funny photo this week from a customer that I had to share with you all.  The picture shows a woman sitting in a chair with her back up against the store counter in the middle of the fish store…..SOUND ASLEEP!  The caption of the photo read, “You think it’s slow”?
We know that it’s definitely slow at there and many of us are struggling with bringing in buying customers.
My partners and I spoke this week about what we can do to help combat the situation that we face each Summer…and one thing we know for sure is that when Summer is in mid stride, our fellow hobbyists are not looking to “Stock-Up”, but they are needing to “Maintain” their aquariums.  And that is why this week we have gone big on our “Clean-Up” Crew packages, and lowered prices to make sure you are getting the best price possible for these snails, crabs and creepy crawling Sea Dwelling Creatures that we need to help keep our aquariums clean and customers buying.
Please notice that on the Customer Appreciation Specials (CAS), that we have highlighted some incredible prices for this week’s specials, and along with this, we have made a section for the clean up crews.
So if you decide to take our great offers and pass them onto your customers or not, it’s up to you all of course, but whatever you do, please make sure you have plenty of these items in stock and use them as a leader to keep your customers buying and caring for their reefs.
Thank you to all of you who have been sending us the great feedback on your orders, as we challenge any of our competitors to provide the quality and service we do on such a regular basis.  The new website with all the great photos of corals for you to choose from has been stirring up quite a bit of noice around the industry, and I am sure it won’t be long before everyone will try to follow us again into that higher level of customer service.
As always, please send us your feedback and thoughts.  I want to hear from you all and know what else we can do to help everyone through the next few weeks and transition back into our popular season.  If you have any business ideas for us to share that may help another retailer, please share them with me and I will note it to others.  Let’s stay together and help each other out….so keep the good stuff coming!
On another note, we have two new sales reps starting with SDC this week and next.  You might be hearing from them soon, and you can take advantage of these two people who are bringing some great product and industry knowledge to our company.  Tammy from Aquaescapes in Alabama will now be helping retailers across the country with their SDC purchases.  Also, Miguel from formerly Fraggle Reef will be joining the SDC team and bringing another huge invert aspect to our company.  I am really excited and grateful to introduce these two great people to you all so you all know that SDC just got a lot stronger!
Have a great week everyone!
Best regards,
