The White Mouth Comet Eel is a moderately-sized moray eel that can attain lengths up to 48" as an adult. Its common name is a faithful description of (Gymnothorax meleagris) as its dark chocolate-brown body is beautifully peppered with a constellation of small white dots that look like stars against a dark night. The striking stark white coloration inside this eel’s large, gaping mouth offers incredible contrast that belie its simple brown and white coloration. This disruptive coloration helps to "break up" the appearance of the White Mouth Comet Eel, allowing it to conceal itself from both predator and prey.
